This video is so awesome for so many reasons. Much like the Shit ___ Say meme, the Flip Side videos (there’s another one) take a critical look at how men and women behave, and expose how ridiculous it is when roles are reversed.

I’ve been accused of having a double standard when it comes to my expectations of women. I do. Is it hypocritical? No.

Men and women are wired differently, and we meet in the middle, but it’s a losing proposition to think that we should or could be expected to act the same, or want the same things.

Respect is a fundamental, non-negotiable part of an intimate relationship, or a friendship. We also must respect the fact that we’re different, and that’s what makes dating fun, exciting, and thrilling.

brycedotvc:

I wrote a post last week that seems to have struck a cord.

In it, I talked about what I was calling Indie Businesses. Businesses that historically would have raised venture capital, but were deciding to forgo funding and blaze their own trail independent of the pressure and expectations that come with outside investment.

Many commenters rightly pointed out that Indie, or VC free, businesses are the rule rather than the exception and they would be right to posit that. They took issue with me suggesting that this was a new thing but they were only partly right.

You see, the point I wanted to make was that we’re at an critical inflection point for entrepreneurship. The company man and his accompanying gold watch and pension are a relic that I, nor my kids, will see again in our lifetimes. As the book that arrived on my doorstep this week celebrated, the startup is now you. And I believe that’s a fundamental change.

This video celebrating 9 Detroit based businesses captures much of that new independent spirit. Note that no one is talking about raising money, eyeing an IPO or changing the world. They talk of community, and independence, of filling a need and meeting a demand. They make crepes, coffee, pizza, bagels and custard pies. They watch dogs and watch out for visitors to their city. They teach, educate and inform. They share a love for their craft and seem to be collectively crossing fingers that their hard work and passion will be enough to make it on their own.

This video celebrates the spirit of the indie businesses I tried to capture in that post. Which is why it’s required weekend viewing on BRYCE FOT VC.

Saucy

Saucy

Help! Words With Friends Wants to Kill Me

Am I lazy? I hardly think so. But over the last couple weeks I’ve enjoyed a fair amount of doing nothing. It’s actually pretty great. I’ve just been taking it easy, chilling, lampin’, napping and absorbing life, but I have a hard time not beating myself up. What have I accomplished? Nothing, that’s what.

I wouldn’t exactly call it nothing. There have been many, many hours of playing Words With Friends while lying on my bed, riding my bicycle around San Francisco, and even going to the gym (gasp).

My life over the past one year has been marked by periods of intense activity, punctuated by weeks or months of inactivity. I’ve got some great freelance opportunities filling my time, but nothing to sop up my attention surplus.

Two weekends ago I was in New York, visiting with a great organization that had offered me a fantastic job. My role would be to spread the message of a new educational approach that brings gameplay into the classroom, and improves student outcomes. The team, the combination of tech and teaching, and the opportunity, were all great. I still turned it down.

My heart is just not in New York right now. It’s the world’s greatest city—many would argue—but it’s not the only city. And it’s not how I want to live right now.

San Francisco is so chill that it sucks you in, and makes it very hard to let go. By rejecting New York, I also chose San Francisco, and everything that is life in California.

What I love about living here is the food culture (cooking your own food, obsessing over local farms and fresh veggies, drinking wine, having picnics), the great outdoors, and a general emphasis on health and well-being. It’s pretty highfalutin, and I’ll make no apologies for my delight in taking part. I’m not really doing that now. I feel like I’m not doing much of anything.

The idea of productive procrastination is nothing new to me. Basically, when you’re avoiding doing something, you find any distraction that accomplishes something—just not the task you’re avoiding. Working out, reading the news, cleaning up my house (but not my room), are all productive things to do. They’re just not the things I feel I need to be doing.

In my case, I’ve got some side projects that are amazing, as well as side writing for great publications. All of it just takes doing, and I’m enjoying the lazy life a little too much. And what all my projects require is a lot of focus, attention, and a separation from all forms distraction. This is my biggest stumbling block, and I would love to learn how to overcome it. I have the time, and the energy (sorta) to make a big dent in my passion projects, if I can only force myself to do it. Instead, I’m devoting small slices of my attention to 40 different things, and enjoying the slow pace. But as I said, the ruthlessly ambitious part of me can’t appreciate the downtime.

theartofanimation:

A couple people close to me are looking for work right now, and others have asked me what my career path has been like and what lessons I’ve learned from that. I thought about it a lot tonight and this is what I came up with. I’m sure not all of this is accurate — I’m young yet and I will surely…

So much of this rings true with me. I’ve been through many ups and downs since starting my career in San Francisco. The power of networking, and being a good, positive and interesting person cannot be overstated. I would add that it helps to be interested in other people, not for what they can do for you, but for who they are. At the end of the day, we’re not our titles, our contacts, or our salaries, we’re just skin, bones and dreams.

I moved to San Francisco an impressionable hayseed, and have had my kernel cracked in the fiery furnace of adulthood. Times have been terrible and tremendous, often within he same week.

I could elaborate on all the places I’ve been, and what I’ve seen, but I will save that for later.

Last night I was at a gathering at a startup mansion called The Glint. In the house are 12 entrepreneurs working on new companies. Central to the mission of the house is the idea that each person should have a project that triggers he going in their eye, and sparks their creativity endlessly. It’s something we should all strive for.

Since coming to San Francisco I’ve dabbled in a great
many things, and I love this city for the way it encourages constant experimentation, and reinvention. I’ve dabbled and noodled, and never found my personal fountain of joy.

Today I plan to start doing what I know will bring me happiness, which is to share my reflections and advice about relationships, dating, sex, intimacy and friendships. It’s the glint in my eye, and I know I want to share it with the world.

This post is just to announce my intent. From here onwards, expect to see awesome things.

"You are beautiful; but learn to work, for you cannot eat your beauty."

“You are beautiful; but learn to work, for you cannot eat your beauty.”

- Congolese Proverb (via dynamicafrica)

graffiti painted world war II military planes

graffiti painted world war II military planes

Photo

laughingsquid:
